  • What is therapeutic massage? How is it different from something like Swedish massage, or a massage I might receive at a national massage chain location?
    • Therapeutic massage is targeted mobilization of soft tissues in order to restore normal function of the area or body. This is done utilizing a variety of techniques such as Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, or PNF, deep tissue, and other various Eastern and Western massage techniques to release stuck muscles, promote proper circulation, and correct soft tissue imbalances within the body.
    • Therapeutic massage differs from standard massage (also called relaxation massage), in that it aims to help alleviate existing chronic or acute pain and/or conditions a client may have. This can include chronic muscle pain due to an old injury, pain from arthritis or hyper-mobility conditions.
  • What are the hours of operation?
    • In general, our hours are Monday through Friday, from 1 PM to 11PM.
    • We are closed most federal holidays, though other days and/or times will be made unavailable based on therapist availability.
    • Appointments outside of normal hours are possible and must be arranged directly with the therapist.
    • Same day appointments are not generally available.
  • What kinds of services will Knotworks Massage offer?
    • Swedish massage – a relaxation type of massage involving long, smooth strokes and a steady, slow pace that allows the body to come out of its stressed state and into one of relaxation, also called rest and digest.
    • Tui Na massage – A set of traditional Chinese medical massage techniques designed over thousands of years to treat stuck tissues and promote the smooth circulation of blood and Qi (energy.)
    • Acupressure – This technique utilizes the same points used by acupuncturists to release stubborn muscles, relieve pain, and promote an overall feeling of well-being.
    • Cupping – Uses both fire cupping and manual suction cupping to apply suction to the skin in order to release stuck tissues. Can be both static and mobile depending on the needs of the client.
    • Hot stone – Uses basalt stones heated to approximately 115 degrees Fahrenheit that are both statically (unmoving) placed, and used with both Swedish and Eastern techniques to improve the effectiveness of the massage therapy.
    • Gua-sha – Uses stiff, shaped tools to rapidly scrape along the skin. This breaks up fascial adhesions and stuck muscles, promoting blood flow and tissue mobility.
    • Chair Massage – A modified, upright massage in which the client will be in a massage chair generally sitting leaning forward slightly with their head in the headrest. This massage modal limits some techniques and access to certain muscles groups (primarily the hips/glutes), but will otherwise offer a fairly similar experience to table massage.
    • Other possible future services:
      • Reiki energy work
      • Thai Massage
  • Can I bring someone with me?
    • Yes, absolutely. We encourage clients to bring a partner, loved one, or friend if that helps make them feel more comfortable.
    • We are also happy to demonstrate helpful techniques for the partner to use at home to help the client between visits.
  • What are your COVID/pathogen procedures?
    • We still use full COVID safety protocols to include KN95 masking, an air filter, full sanitization of surfaces between clients, and proper handwashing methods.
    • We primarily use unscented isopropyl alcohol (70% concentration or better) to sanitize surfaces.
    • The massage table has a vinyl cover for easy cleaning and sanitization.
  • Do you use scented products?
    • No, we do not buy/use anything scented. Our soap and hand sanitizer are both unscented. Our massage oils have no scent aside from the compounds they are made of. Our sports massage oil has a mint/menthol scent.
  • What type of massage oil do you use?
    • We use jojoba oil for most massages. We also have a CBD infused oil, and a menthol/CBD sports oil for clients who request it. There is no extra charge for these oils.
